6 On 2 – Huey Morgan

Wednesday 30 December
8.00-10.00pm BBC RADIO 2

BBC 6 Music presenter Huey Morgan
BBC 6 Music presenter Huey Morgan

Fun Lovin' Criminal Huey Morgan brings his BBC 6 Music Sunday afternoon show to BBC Radio 2, playing an eclectic mix of the best music from the last six decades, spanning rock, rap, reggae, blues, disco, soul and Latino.

Inspired by his New York upbringing and his experiences as a musician, Huey accompanies his playlist with personal anecdotes and stories, in his own inimitable laid-back style.

In the programme, he meets fellow New Yorker and quirky chanteuse Regina Spektor, who has recently achieved success with her latest album release, Far.

Spektor grew up in the Soviet Union and trained as a concert pianist before moving to the Bronx in New York at the age of nine with her family, where she became exposed to rock, hip hop and Latin music. She became a part of the Lower East-Side anti-folk scene in the late-Nineties, alongside the Moldy Peaches and Ben Kweller, releasing her first solo album in 2001.

Her fifth release this year was accompanied by a world tour and festival appearances. Huey talks to her about achieving mainstream and critical success, their shared love of New York, her musical career from touring with The Strokes and the Kings Of Leon to working with Jeff Lynne on her new album and what her plans are for 2010.

UK Confidential

Wednesday 30 December
11.00am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4

With unique access to secret government papers, Martha Kearney presents a look at the political events of 1979 as told through the Cabinet minutes, Prime Ministerial papers and Foreign and Commonwealth Office documents, which are being released to the public at the end of the year.

Domestic stories include the growing crisis of confidence in the Labour government, the handling of backbench rebellions, the winter of discontent and the hand-over of power to Margaret Thatcher following the Conservative victory in the 1979 General Election.

The papers reveal the government's first response to the Ayatollah's return to Iran and a threat to Anglo-American diplomatic relations.

The programme weaves together dramatised extracts from the papers, news footage material, discussion with studio guests – including former cabinet ministers and top-level civil servants – and special reports compiled by correspondents.

Thinking Allowed

Wednesday 30 December
4.00-4.30pm BBC RADIO 4

This week's Thinking Allowed comes from the University of Bedfordshire as part of BBC Radio 4's university tour.

Laurie Taylor is joined by an audience of students as he discusses class and social mobility with a team of expert panellists. In 2003 Tony Blair announced that he wanted the number of teenagers who went to university to rise to 50 per cent. While numbers are up, a report from The Higher Education Statistics Agency shows that the social background of those who go to university has barely changed, with the middle classes providing the majority of students. The programme asks if education provides a means to social mobility, whether social mobility is even a meaningful expression and whether society has ignored class barriers in favour of focusing on identity politics.

Laurie is joined by: Lynsey Hanley, Guardian journalist and author of Estates – An Intimate History; Richard Reeves, director of think tank Demos; Danny Dorling, Professor of Geography at Sheffield University; and sociologist Dick Hobbs from the London School of Economics. They discuss questions of class barriers, social divides and whether Britain will ever shed its class system and the divisions it creates.
