Composers Of The Year 2009 BBC Radio 3 continues to broadcast its first ever complete cycle of Haydn's ground-breaking symphonies. Today's edition of Classical Collection features Symphony No. 2 in C major which was composed in the late 1750s when Haydn was engaged as music director to Count von Morzin in Vienna. Sarah Walker introduces a recording of the work by the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra, conducted by its founder, Adam Fischer, part of Fischer's complete Haydn symphony cycle. This orchestra was created to perform Haydn's works in the places where he lived and worked and to bring together the finest Austrian and Hungarian musicians. The cycle was recorded in the Haydnsaal of the Esterhazy Palace, in Eisenstadt, where many of Haydn's works were first performed, and the composer also worked as Kapellmeister to the Esterhazy Princes from the 1760s to 1790. Donald Macleod continues his exploration of the life and music of Purcell in celebration of the 350th anniversary of his birth, with one of the UK's leading scholars on the composer, Professor Bruce Wood whose new biography of Purcell is due to be published in May. Today, Donald and Bruce discuss Purcell's earliest theatrical jobs and see how he tackled some of his court commissions. Versatility was a necessity in Purcell's age. Early on in his career he successfully dipped his toe into theatrical waters, producing some hit music for Nathaniel Lee's Theodosius. Claudia Hammond explores how the treatment and understanding of mental illness has changed over the past 50 years, with the help of BBC Radio 4 listeners who responded to an appeal for testimonies. According to the Mental Health Foundation and World Health Organisation, in any one year in the UK, one in four people will suffer from mental health problems. Although the huge Victorian asylums could be cruel and impersonal, they did afford a retreat from a world that could be difficult to navigate at a time of mental crisis. But some feel that treatment today raises its own challenges for people coping with mental illness. Claudia charts the developments in mental health care decade by decade, from the huge impact of the new psycho-active drugs in the Fifties, via the anti-psychiatry movement of the Sixties and the closure of the asylums, through care in the community in the Eighties and the development of SSRI's (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors), to ask what the future holds for mental health care. Sean and Mary dress up for the Spanish evening but there is a problem with the costumes, in this midweek visit to Silver Street. However, they come up with a bizarre solution. Kenny, meanwhile, takes steps to ensure the Rangers players behave as they have a big match tomorrow – although he later discovers they are roaring drunk at the Golden Crown. Kenny enlists Jaggy's help to sort them out but, when they arrive, it seems the problem has already been taken care of.
