  2. 'Sunrise gives you a feeling of energy'published at 11:24 BST

Paddleboarders are on the sea in front of the sun.

Jay Manning started paddle boarding 20 years ago and was one of the UK’s first paddle boarders. He is so successful in the sport that he has 10,000 followers. He loves the beach at Joss Bay in Broadstairs, Kent, and camped overnight here. “When winter comes we remember these summer moments. We just enjoy the ocean much as possible and sunrise gives you a feeling of energy. It’s a celebration of summer," Jay says.

"It was really hard to get up at 2:30am to come here, but it was totally worth it," she says.

"It was incredible to watch the sun rising together with dozens other fellow paddle boarders, and it is something magical about the sunrise.

"It was the first time for all of us doing paddle boarding on the summer solstice, but we cannot wait to come here again next year."

  7. All eyes on the weatherpublished at 10:25 BST

A weather map showing the hot weather temperatures across the UK.

All eyes have been on the sun this morning as people celebrate the UK's longest day - but what is the weather set to do this week?

Well the Met Office has expanded its amber heat warning for Monday and Tuesday, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could climb to 36 or 37 (97-99F) in parts of the UK.

An amber warning means there are likely to be widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

Some locations could see temperatures above 30C (86F) for six or seven consecutive days, with overnight temperatures remaining above 20C (68F) in places.

The hot weather, which is likely to become a heatwave, is expected to begin today, especially in the south and east of the UK.

Florence Moffat hiked Wansfell Pike in Cumbria to watch the sunrise with her husband Josh, some friends and her parents, a promise she had made last year while undergoing cancer treatment.

She says: "This time last year I was extremely poorly in hospital having just started cancer treatment. I promised myself in 2026 I’d watch the sunrise from somewhere amazing on solstice.

"I still have cancer but am much stronger now and due to have a liver transplant next month. I went to all my chemo sessions wearing a party hat, so it felt fitting to wear one this morning too!"

The summer solstice may have dawned under a blanket of fog on Hornsea beach this morning, denying people a view of the Sun rising over the North Sea, but it did little to dampen the atmosphere.

Hundreds of people gathered on the shoreline to mark the longest day of the year, braving the chilly water for an early morning sea dip before warming up around barbecues on the beach.

Many spoke of the invigorating feeling of getting into the sea, as well as the strong sense of community, friendship and wellbeing that keeps them coming back year after year.
