Elunend Morgan, the Welsh first minister, lost her seat

It has been a while since we took a look at what is happening elsewhere in the UK, so let’s go around the grounds, so to speak.

In Wales, the Labour first minister has lost her seat, with Plaid Cymru now expected to be the largest party in the Senedd.

Eluned Morgan, who will step down as the party's leader, dropped to fourth in Ceredigion Penfro, behind Plaid, Reform UK and the Conservatives – becoming the first leader of a government in the UK to lose their seat while in office.

Polling expert Prof John Curtice said it was unlikely that Plaid would reach the 49 seats needed for a majority, but they “may not be far away”.

Current predictions put them at between 41 and 46, with Reform taking between 32 and 34 seats.

In England, meanwhile, Reform have gained more than 900 new councillors and control of six new councils, including Sunderland in the north east and Havering in London.

Labour have lost more than 700 councillors and control of 15 councils.

The Greens have also picked up two mayoral votes, in Lewisham and Hackney in London.

  13. 'A new milestone' for the Scottish Greenspublished at 17:06 BST

Lorna Slater smiles at the camera

Former Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater became the first Green MSP to win a constituency seat earlier this afternoon.

Now Holly Bruce has become the second after she won the Glasgow Southside seat.

"Holly is going to be a great MSP," Slater says. "We absolutely weren't really expecting that, so I'm blown away.

"Two constituencies is amazing for us."

She tells BBC Scotland News that the party has built on its experience on Scottish councils.

"We've been building support, so this is a new milestone for the Scottish Greens in Edinburgh and Glasgow," she says.

"And it shows how that progressive agenda really has support, especially from young people."

  14. How has the electoral map changed in the south of Scotland?published at 17:05 BST

    Phil Sim
    Scotland political correspondent

The redrawing of Scotland’s electoral map since 2021 has had potentially significant changes in the south of Scotland electoral region.

The region has lost the East Lothian constituency, which has been added into Edinburgh. And it has gained two seats on the other side of the central belt, in East Kilbride and Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse.

If the seat had been set up like that in 2021, then the addition of those two seats - won by the SNP - would have changed how the regional seats were allocated under Holyrood’s top-up list system.

Each constituency won in a region makes it that bit harder for a party to win a list seat - meaning the “notional” result we are comparing to in South Scotland has one fewer list MSP for the SNP, and one extra for the Scottish Greens.

It doesn’t necessarily affect who wins seats today - but it does affect how we view the change, when comparing back to 2021.

After a flurry of constituency results here in Edinburgh, we're just coming up for air.

And there's no doubt the big winners are the Scottish Greens and the Scottish Liberal Democrats.

The former has delivered a historic result here with victory for Lorna Slater over the SNP's Angus Robertson in Edinburgh Central.

Meanwhile, the party's candidate for the Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith seat, Kate Nevens, added a chunky 19% to the Greens vote share to finish in second place.

The Greens are also anticipating some good results on the regional lists too.

Meanwhile, the Lib Dems have secured two constituency seats - adding to Alex Cole-Hamilton's share of the vote in Edinburgh North Western, and winning the new Edinburgh Northern seat over the SNP.

  18. What's happened so far?published at 17:01 BST

The SNP will be the biggest party by far but they won't get an overall majority, the BBC is predicting.

Polling expert Prof John Curtice says they will get between 59 and 63 seats in the Scottish Parliament, short of the 65 needed for an overall majority.

    • The SNP currently has 49 of the 61 seats declared
    • The Scottish Greens have won their first ever Scottish constituency seats - in Edinburgh Central, where Lorna Slater beat the SNP's Angus Robertson, and in Glasgow Southside where Holly Bruce won Nicola Sturgeon's old constituency
    • The Lib Dems lost their traditional stronghold seat of Shetland to the SNP but they gained Edinburgh Northern from them
    • Labour made a surprise gain in the Western Isles, taking Na h-Eileanan an Iar from the SNP. They also won Edinburgh Southern from the SNP.
    • Reform have taken an average of 16% of the vote but have not taken a constituency seat. They will be hoping to do better on the regional list
    • The SNP's vote share is down 9 percentage points on 2021, the Tories are down 10 points and Labour is down 2

  20. Nicola Sturgeon's former seat taken by the Scottish Greens in second constituency winpublished at 16:56 BST

There has been a second constituency win for the Scottish Greens, this time in Glasgow Southside.

Holly Bruce, who traded her career in law for politics, won Nicola Sturgeon's former seat from the SNP by just over 3,000 votes.

SNP minister Kaukab Stewart has been beaten into second place.
