Trump's address - in which he considered whether or not he should "annihilate" Iran - was "a very strong speech from a very strong president", an Israeli official tells me.

Ambassador Danny Danon, Israel's permanent representative to the UN, said Iran must choose between the "easy way" - i.e. negotiations - or the "hard way" - sanctions and military action.

Danon also criticises UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres's earlier address as "weak".

"We have seen the weakness of the secretary-general, not only with Iran but also with Russia and Ukraine and also in Gaza - that's why President Trump is stepping in," he says.

It's only scheduled to last 20 minutes or so, but Prime Minister Andy Burnham's first face-to-face meeting with Donald Trump will be packed with attendees.

It could not come at a more critical time, with serious challenges arising at home for Britain's premier that at least one top economist compares to skating on "thin fiscal ice", external.

Despite previously disparaging him as "extremely liberal" and the former "mayor of a town" (rather than a city), Trump is often known to give warm welcomes in private to newly appointed world leaders.

Trump also used his speech earlier to highlight the humanitarian efforts led by his wife Melania Trump on the Ukraine-Russian war.

"I also want to recognise the extraordinary work of our great First Lady who has secured the safe return of many displaced Ukrainian and Russian children back home to their families," he said to applause from audience members. "Great job. She worked so hard on it."

Last month, the White House said 34 children have been reunited with families in Ukraine and Russia since she made a personal appeal in a 2025 letter to Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

After his speech at the UN, President Trump has met with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark to sign a landmark security agreement.

Trump described the deal as "long in the making" and says it will lead to a "long term, fantastic relationship" between the three signatories.

Although Greenland is a sovereign territory, it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark which primarily handles its foreign policy issues.

There are few details available, although during his speech Trump had said that the US will build "two very major military bases" in Greenland.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says the new agreement satisfies US security concerns about foreign adversaries gaining a foothold on the island while respecting Danish and Greenlandic domestic rights.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has also been upbeat about the security deal.

"We are signing an agreement that brings the 1951 defence agreement into 2026," Nielsen says. "We are, have been and will remain a steadfast friend of the United States and a part of the Western Alliance. Your security is our security, and our security is your security... This is a win-win-win agreement."

Trump did not respond to reporters' repeated questions about the deal falling short of his previous proposal for the US to own Greenland, which was roundly rejected by both Denmark and Greenland.

I'm currently in a side room at Unga, where President Trump has taken the podium along with Danish PM Mette Frederiksen and Prime Minister Jans-Frederik Nielson of Greenland.

The three came here to formally sign a deal on Greenland's security, resolving a diplomatic dispute sparked by President Trump's threats to take it by force.

We don't have many details on the agreement. But Denmark and Greenland's governments will be hoping it ends the long-simmering disagreement that shook the Nato alliance to its core and sorely tested the US-Danish relationship.

This is already being hailed by Trump administration officials as a deal that has enhanced US security at minimal cost - and with relationships intact.

Many, however, will question whether Trump's rhetoric and frayed relations with European allies have created a long-term problem and permanent doubts in the eyes of friends, and whether it was worth it.

The reason is simple — the sheer scale of the thing. Add to that security, and a million and one VIP diaries colliding with each other, and timetables, while diligently read in the building and beyond, are usually conscientiously assembled works of fiction.

Which brings me to the dozen of us loitering in a corner waiting to go into the meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Andy Burnham. It was due to start about now. But yes, you guessed it, it’s been delayed. And no, I don’t know until when either.

Away from the UN General Assembly, and ahead of his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump, UK PM Andy Burnham spoke at a business and investor roundtable where he met various players including Tim Cook, executive chair of Apple.

Burnham told business chiefs he wants a “single set of global principles and standards” to guard against rogue artificial intelligence (AI).

The issue of AI regulation is one of the dominant themes at the UN gathering in New York and is expected to be a key part of Burnham's speech to the Unga later on Tuesday.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump used his Unga address to firmly reject calls for international supervision of AI, calling them a "globalist scheme" to control the technology.

Donald Trump has again taken the opportunity to attack the United Nations, which he believes is “imposing a radical-left wing agenda".

UN insiders described the first year of Trump’s second term as one of chaos for the organisation, but believe the UN is now in a marginally better position.

Yes, the US continues to withhold billions of dollars from the UN, despite paying just recently $827m towards its mandatory dues to the regular and peacekeeping budget. And it continues to attack certain UN entities and the International Criminal Court. But it’s also leaning on the United Nations strategically.

The Trump administration has actively worked with the UN to support security in gang-ravaged Haiti. The US also turned to the UN Security Council to endorse its Gaza peace plan and the establishment of its Board of Peace.

And when the US and Israel chose to attack Iran, the US worked with Gulf leaders to get a Security Council resolution with a record number of sponsors to condemn Iran, without mentioning airstrikes by the US and Israel.

Even the Trump administration cannot deny the convening power this organisation offers to push through its priorities.

The Cuban delegation appeared to get up and leave the assembly chamber as Trump turned his sights on them, referring to the island as a "failed state".

Trump has, over the last year, increasingly rounded on Cuba's communist government.

He did so again today, promising that it will "fail" and is under "enormous pressure". "Let's see what happens," Trump said of negotiations.

The administration has not, however, provided a detailed picture of what it believes change will look like in Cuba, and whether the government would remain in place in some form - as has so far been the case in Venezuela since Nicolás Maduro's capture.

Donald Trump presented Iran with a stark choice at the UN General Assembly: reach an agreement with Washington and rebuild the country, or face the rapid “annihilation” of the Islamic Republic. He then predicted that a deal would probably follow the US elections.

The remarks illustrate Trump’s familiar strategy of coercive diplomacy—keeping negotiations open while threatening overwhelming force.

But his language blurred the distinction between destroying the political system and threatening Iran itself. References to leaving “no chance of survival” and “no hope” for future generations pose a striking irony in delivering this warning at the United Nations, an organisation that was founded to save future generations from war.

Yet the speech was not a declaration that diplomacy has failed. It was an attempt to define the terms of possible negotiations: Washington remains prepared to make a deal, but only under the shadow of an existential threat.

Donald Trump has a penchant for branding and in his speech he gave Artificial Intelligence a new name: Super Intelligence.

"The use of the word artificial makes it sound fake," he said. "It's not fake, it's actually amazing. But we have to be careful," he added. "Welcome to the new world of super intelligence - SI," he went on to say.

Trump has previously argued that whoever wins AI, wins, and he is firmly against regulation. But that puts him at odds with many here.

The question is whether the slow pace of diplomacy can keep up with AI’s rapid development.

Trump has just brought up the war in Ukraine, promising that both sides have "had it" and that a negotiated end to the conflict is around the corner.

It is not clear what leads him to believe this, particularly as Ukraine and Russia trade tit-for-tat missile and drone strikes deep within each other's territory.

The president has been making similar promises, repeatedly, since early last year at the beginning of his term. At points in April and May, White House officials such as the current UN ambassador, Mike Waltz, were even suggesting that a ceasefire could be weeks away. It wasn't.

At last year's Unga, Trump surprised everyone by claiming that Russia was a "paper tiger" and that he believed, at least then, that Ukraine might be able to take back all the territory it had lost to Russian occupation.

We don't know whether that's still his assessment - but Trump is meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky later today, and many around the world will be watching to see whether Trump provides any insight on why he appears to be optimistic.

Trump says he has a big decision to make over whether a deal will be made with Iran which "lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before".

On the other hand, Trump says he could "annihilate the Islamic Republic", and "never give them a chance to destroy people and countries again".

"I believe we will make a deal right after the election because it doesn't make sense for them not to," Trump says.

Trump says he wants to express his gratitude to the United Nations Security Council for their unanimous support of "our 20 point Gaza peace plan and for officially approving the Board of Peace".

He says nearly 30 countries have joined the board, and thanks member nations for contributing millions of dollars in relief.

He goes on to say that the US is working closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, adding that "we will get that done, more quickly than people understand".

Trump, quite evidently, does not have a high opinion of the United Nations, its current format, or its role in the world. Few, if any, expected a warm and jovial speech.

From my vantage point above the assembly, I can see very little reaction from those below. Most are staring straight ahead, with a few jotting notes. His promise of a nuclear-free Iran, however, resulted in a smattering of applause.

The White House Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles was nodding quietly, sat beside Secretary Bessent.

Trump's speech will be largely recognisable to those to follow the White House closely. His talking points are familiar, such as his claims of a military victory over Iran, his promises of a flourishing US economy and lower oil prices, and "eight wars" ended through the threat of tariffs.

The main question many will have will be what Trump means that he is considering "annihilating" Iran's Islamic Republic - and whether that is a change in strategy or a ploy to revive negotiations.

Speeches from the podium might be delivered in front of global delegates, but they are always aimed first and foremost at a domestic audience.

And that is especially true as Donald Trump looks ahead to the midterm elections.

His opening remarks touched on US employment and the poverty rate, cutting regulation and taxes, the stock market and border security.

President Trump says the US is leading in virtually everything and the future is bright before turning to making his case for the war in Iran, which is unpopular with US voters.

But he insists he will give no credence to the election when it comes to how he will approach Iran.

US President Donald Trump has just started speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The leader of the United States, the host nation of the Unga, always speaks early on. Other world leaders set to address the UN today include France's Emmanuel Macron, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and - later in the day - UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

I've just arrived at the United Nations, where the White House press pool has been put in a box overlooking the assembly.

It's crowded in this room, but from where I'm standing, I can clearly see President Lula speaking, and I caught a brief glimpse of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent taking a seat.

A few minutes ago, we were given brief excerpts of President Trump's speech - in which he sticks largely to the talking points that the White House had previewed.

Among the primary talking points is Iran, with Trump arguing that the US-Israeli attacks that began in April prevented the "slaughter" that could ensue from a nuclear-armed Iran backing terrorist groups.

The excerpts we've seen are also heavy on his "America First" agenda - as well as on praise for his own ability to govern.

"While others have ignored threats, I have confronted them. While others have talked of courage, America has shown it," he is expected to say. "While others have promised strength, I have used it to make America the most powerful country in the world."

Here in the General Assembly hall just ahead of Trump's speech, President Volodymyr Zelensky has taken a seat at the head of the Ukrainian delegation - he’s directly below where I’m watching in the press booths.

Another notable arrival is Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is in the back row of the US delegation’s seats.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi hasn’t come back to his seat, which is currently filled by a more junior Iranian official - Nasser Assadi Nazari.
