Chris Brown given suspended eight-month prison sentence over nightclub attackpublished at 14:06 GMT
Image source, PA MediaUS singer Chris Brown has been issued an eight-month custodial sentence, suspended for a year, after an attack at a London nightclub in 2023 which left music producer Abe Diaw needing hospital treatment for head and knee injuries.
Brown, 37, and his co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu attended Southwark Crown Court after having each pleaded guilty to the offence of affray in July.
Akinlolu, 40, was given the lesser sentence of four months which was also suspended - his role in the attack was deemed "significant" by Judge Tony Baumgartner but it was noted that in contrast to Brown he neither initiated it nor used a bottle.
The court saw CCTV footage of the incident, and the judge explained how Brown hit Diaw with a tequila bottle - including using it to strike him on the head, describing "the repeated use" of a bottle as "plainly dangerous".
The judge considered how it took place in a "crowded" and "confined" environment and that the two defendants pursued Diaw and continued the attack after he tried to move away.
The brevity of the incident was also taken into account, lasting "no more" than 20 seconds, but the violence was "intense" although it wasn't planned, he said.
Neither Brown nor Akinlolu will be going to prison today - but they were told their sentence should still be considered a "punishment". Both men must also each pay £1,500 towards the prosecution's costs.
