At deputy PMQs earlier, David Lammy contrasted Labour and Conservative records on prison building in England and Wales.
Lammy told the Commons that "the last Labour government built 28,000 prison places. We are building 14,000 by 2031 and we already delivered 3,200”.
The previous Labour government delivered 27,830 net prison places over its 13 years in office, external, according to multiple statements by former Labour justice minister Sir Nicholas Dakin in Parliament.
Under the Conservatives, there was a net total of 482 prison places added, external over their 14 years in power, Ministry of Justice analysis shows.
Although the Tories built about 13,000 prison places, roughly 12,500 were closed between 2010 and 2024 after some of the older Victorian prisons fell into disrepair.
Labour has committed to building 14,000 more prison places by 2031. So far about 3,100 of those places have been opened but the government hasn’t made clear whether that’s a net total, external.
