Local Music SceneYou are in: Leicester > Entertainment > Music > Local Music Scene > The Right Prescription ![]() The ladies love Fletch! The Right PrescriptionBy Derek Wheatley, Guest Contributor Actor and singer Alan Fletcher, most famous for the role of Dr. Karl Kennedy in student favourite soap Neighbours, appeared at DMU's Student Union on 24 November. Derek brings you more! (Photos: Drew Mallins) The doctor entered the stage amidst colossal cheers from the students present.
He then proceeded to answer some questions which had been prepared for him before the event, asked by students. Amongst these was the crowd-pleasing question, "Who was the better kisser, Sarah, Susan or Izzy?" Alan replied, "The best kisser was Sarah [this response wasn't received that well], the best girl to go out with was Izzy [this was more acceptable], and the best girl to do everything with was Susan [the crowd went wild]". The final question was the risqué, "How long is your stethoscope?" - to which Fletcher answered, "It's long enough to go all the way to your heart". This pleased the crowd much! The MusicThe evening ended with Fletcher staying for a mass photo opportunity, to which a queue formed spanning half the length of the student union, packed with students who were determined to get a photo with Dr. Karl Kennedy, one of Neighbours' most popular character, who has been in the soap for 13 years. ![]() Alan and Derek! (Photo: Drew Mallins) Fletcher also shared his vocal talents, singing a remixed cover of Smokie's 'Living Next Door to Alice', switching Alice for his on-screen wife Susan (played by Jackie Woodburne), as well as many of the lyrics. Also a song, which had been written as a tribute to Susan by a fan, entitled 'I Got A Crush On Susan K". Understandably, his appearance has been compared to that of Stephanie McIntosh, who plays fellow Neighbours character Sky Mangel, who appeared at the union a few weeks previously. Her brief appearance, that comprised of singing two songs then disappearing, left many students feeling offended and cheated. TouringFletcher is currently touring the UK, promoting his band Waiting Room as lead singer with other members including Tommy Rando, Chris Hawker and drummer Jeff Consi. With a handful of their own songs they incorporate a selection of cover versions into their set, including Kaiser Chiefs' 'I Predict A Riot', Killers' 'Somebody Told Me' and Foo Fighters' 'Best of You'. ![]() Thumbs up for Dr K! The band's next stop after Leicester was due to be Edinburgh, followed by three weeks of touring the UK. Their new single 'So Wrong', is now available to buy and their new album 'Live At The Elephant' will be out on December 17. The student union at DMU has been a proving ground for many already established and potentially debilitated celebrities. Previous occupants have been stars like Roy Walker from the original series of Catchphrase, and Keith "Cheggers" Chegwin, the man of many on screen talents. Even the music scene has been indulged by American band Wheatus, and most recently East 17, who were set to return a second time "by popular demand", however they failed to show up due to a transport breakdown. last updated: 31/12/2007 at 13:08 SEE ALSOYou are in: Leicester > Entertainment > Music > Local Music Scene > The Right Prescription External Links
