Lager saga

By Jessica Rose
Youngsters from Hinckley have helped to make a film about the dangers of underage drinking. Read more about the production below. And click on the link at the right hand side of this page to see clips from the film.

Seeing a bunch of kids standing around in the street swigging from cans of lager is a pretty depressing sight.

Nearly a quarter of eleven to fifteen-year-olds are regular drinkers, according to the Department of Health.

But one group of Hinckley youngsters is bucking the trend and has made a film about the perils of underage drinking.

The film, called Four Parts Empty, has been made by students from John Cleveland College and Redmoor High School, with the help of religious group Fosseway Youth for Christ.

It is hoped it will be shown in other schools in Leicestershire.

The 40 minute film follows four characters and the effect teenage drinking has on them.

Nigel Roberts, director of Fosseway Youth for Christ, says this is ideal for the classroom because the film can be split into sections.

He said: “Pupils can watch different parts of the film and have discussions about each one.

“We want other schools in the county to screen the film too as part of their citizenship lessons.”

I was in this film too, I played some drunk in it, I've played in other films like holly too. I too have the same opinion about it being usefull in the schools because they can then see what really happens when you get involved with the wrong people. I know a guy who did underage drinking and had to go to hospital as he had drank too much. I am glad that these YFC films are having impact on some of the people our age.

i was in the film it was an amazin experience and im glad the message got across!

I was another person to be involved in the film. Playing a 'bad girl' who obviously drinks alot was very different to the people I have played in other various films which deal with the same issues. I think it was really usefull to use in schools beacause it's aimed at people our age who might have difficulties with peer pressure or problems at home.

Along with Ben, i was involved in Four parts Empty. It isn't the first educational film we and the YFC team have made, so you may want to take a look at those too! I'm pleased that this message is reaching so many young people and hope that it changes the way they think.

im 28 and i dont drink alcohol at all. i get a lot of pressure off others to drink but i never back down. i enjoy myself more than most drinkers do and im proud that i dont drink. it looks horrid to see youngsters guzzling beer.

I was in 4 parts empty (so I guess I am famous now), it was a very enjoyable experience, where I met new friends and I was proud to be able to raise this important issue through the video. I hope to be part of simular things in the future. I hope that you enjoy the extracts and if you are able to see the full video enjoy that also. (I am the one who was bullied and turned to drink to "help") Thanks YFC and Redmoor for the oppurtunity.

Would like to have seen more, but understand it is just extracts. It looked really well made and carries an important message

Mrs Vandertramp
Excellent film. Great acting!

Tim Lea
Having seen the whole of the film I think it is an a excellent resource. The film is well made and tackles an issue which many young people face today. It will be a valuable resource for anyone who wants to help young people address and think through what is a serious issue. Get a copy and use it in school or in youth work.
