My grandmother, Irene, told me this story about life in Kent during the War.
Nanny used to work in an egg packing factory near Ashford in the War. One day she was returning after a full day's work - she cycled home. She was cycling along the road when a dog-fight was happening overhead. It was a very frightening experience! Well, there were fields either side of her and no cover to speak of, other than the ditch at the side of the road. So, in jumped Nanny, only to find that ditch was full of water and mud!
Eventually, when it was safe, Nanny emerged from the ditch covered in mud. She cycled home, where her Mum made her strip off downstairs. In those days people didn't have nice warm bathrooms like today! Poor Nanny had to clean off downstairs, quickly before her Dad came home. she was so cold and wet tha her Mum let her go upstairs to bed to warm up!
Nanny is now a young lady in her 80s and has never forgotten that day!
