A14 Anthems

Ever been stuck in a jam on the A14? Those who use the road regularly will tell you that it's become the county's 'road to hell', with traffic jams and hold-ups causing no end of frustration for drivers...

We've all been stuck on the A14 at some point. It seems to be the most controversial stretch of road in Cambridgeshire. With major accidents occurring nearly every week and huge jams during rush hour - not to mention the chaos when it snows - the A14 is the bane of many people's lives.

To relieve the tension and stress of driving along the A14, listeners to Nick Carter's Early Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire have helped to compile a very special selection of songs...

A crash on the A14
A crash on the A14

'A14 Anthems' is a collection of musical hits that celebrate life on Cambridgeshire's most infamous road. A popular feature with the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire audience, listeners have sent in 40 suggestions for songs - that's enough for a two disc compilation CD!

Listeners voted for their ultimate 'A14 Anthem' amd over the August Bank Holiday Monday in 2004, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire played the county's favourite A14 Anthems - the songs we like to sing along to while we're sat on the county's biggest car park!

"The idea was to make a virtual album that reflects how we feel about the A14, it then became a double album because the response was so large!"
Nick Carter - Early Breakfast Show Presenter

Early Breakfast Show presenter Nick Carter said "the response has been brilliant with lots of votes and lots of positive feed-back. It's nice to know that something good can come from a road being so bad".

Taking the top spot in the chart was Chris Rea's 'Road to Hell', with Louis Armstrong's classic 'We Have All The Time in the World' coming in second. Find out what songs made the top ten in 'The Very Best of the A14 Anthems' with our list below...

For more details listen to Nick Carter's Early Breakfast Show, Monday - Friday, 5.00 - 6.45am on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire - 96 and 95.7 FM.

A14 runs from Coventry to Felixstowe bypassing Northampton, Huntingdon, Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds and Ipswich. The A14 has 64 junction and is the West-East Anglia Trunk Road with 2-3 lanes for extra traffic. A14 is a 140 miles trunk road that links with the Midlands and Anglia. Why is there a CD called A14 Anthems. Its madness. Why make A14 much more better with 3 lanes all the way from Felixstowe to Coventry (M1/M6 interchange) and back to Felixstowe for more extra traffic in the near future.

Jim
imform the slow traffic to keep intouch with life, they are mostly to blame for the chaos

Paul Mansfield
this is gettting very dated now. please do a new album or remove this page from the traffic news. thanks.

CBS
Used to travel the A14 to visit farms and cottages; no slip roads on or off, absolute suicide!!

Boo D
I think that road works should not take place during the day because they hold people up, causing them to be late, angry and extremely annoyed!

Ruud (Holland)
I travel a lot on the A14, indeed limit overtaking lorries and ban slow traffic like bikes.Improved the road like the new part by Bury.

David
I'm really not sure how failing to even start bringing this key road up to standard till 2010 improves anything, including the environment. When will this Government spend a decent amount of the tax take from motoring on transport - including roads? I agree, look how much better they do it in Europe!

PETER
BAD DRIVERS NOT INDICATING, JUMPING LANES, CUTTING IN AT THE LAST SECOND, PEOPLE STILL USING MOBILES, NO POLICE PRESENCE,PUT POLICE BACK ON THE MAIN ROADS,AND PUT CAMERAS IN THE VILLAGES

Chris
Simple, prevent lorries from overtaking on the duel lane section for now. Bringing the road to three lanes or more in the future.

ALAN
Nothing wrong with the road it is the poor driving i.e. to the particular features of the a14 is the problem.Learn to drive!!

Toni
I will buy the cd, and I agree limit the lorries from overtaking

Anton
If you release it I am buying it straight away. It is the road to Hell all right

steve
Why don't British road planners look to Europe for better ideas

suzanne
I agree with Jon and Carol, CD for xmas and 3 lanes at least around the north of Cambridge, change the priority of the interchange with the A428? Make the A428 filter into the A14 instead of the way it is now?

Danielle
i think that the road should be made safe. and that people should keep there eyes on the road and keep to the speed limit

chrissie a
The A14 cannot handle the volume of traffic......also the road surface is terrible. Theres constantly accidents happening and Im so glad that I dont have to travel on this road everyday anymore :-)

Jon
Make it three lanes from A1(M) - Harwich (M14 anyone?)Easier exits / entries on the interchanges(A421/M11/A14 junction...we're they having a giggle?)Limit overtaking by lorries? Then we'll ALL be singing "Bat out of Hell"!

carol
please release the cd yes the a14 got to have something done. i think about havin convoy in the list of song it will be hit cd so come on lets have it released for christmas
