Electronics and sustainability

Electronics are devices and gadgets that use electricity to work. They include things like phones, computers, TVs, and game consoles. These devices can do a wide range of things such as show videos, play games, or make it possible to connect with friends and family.

Innovations in technology can lead to new electronic devices becoming available with new functions and facilities. This can create demand for the latest products, and can contribute to increased production and purchasing of electronic devices.

What impact does electronic production have on our planet?

Some people might argue that the creation and use of electronic devices bring benefits to everyday life. Electronic devices can positively influence society, by contributing to increased connectivity and convenience. It can also be argued that the production of these devices boosts the economy. However, others might argue that the production of electronics can significantly harm the planet's ecosystems and environments as these processes often require large amounts of energy and resources.

Some advantages of electronics might include:

SocietyEconomyEnvironment
Can allow people to stay connected with friends and family.More jobs could be created through the process of researching, designing, producing and selling electronic products.Creating resource-efficient designs and recycling programs can help minimise the environmental impact of electronic production.

Some disadvantages of electronics might include:

SocietyEconomyEnvironment
Could lead to over dependence on gadgets and devices.Producing new electrical devices can be expensive and may have an impact on the environment. Developing and manufacturing devices often needs a lot of investment and can involve mining for the raw materials needed to make them. The production of electronic devices can contribute to the depletion of natural resources. For example, materials like lithium, silver and copper are often used in the manufacture of mobile phones, and demand for these resources can increase as more devices are produced.

Smartphones and the environment

It can be argued that the environmental impact of mobile phones extends across their entire life cycle, from manufacturing to disposal. Production often requires significant natural resources and energy, which can contribute to pollution, affect habitats, and greenhouse gas emissions. However, some companies are now using recycled materials when possible to try and reduce the environmental impact of electrical device production.

Mobile phones are manufactured and transported all over the world. The emissions associated with transportation can add to their overall carbon footprint. In addition, energy used during a phone's lifespan, together with the electronic waste created when devices are replaced or disposed of, can create further environmental challenges.

Some ways that the environmental impact of phones can be reduced include:

  • making phones last longer
  • using more recycled materials
  • promoting energy-saving features
  • improving the management of electronic waste better
  • increasing awareness of these issues
