Plans will see extensive refurbishment of the interior |
Plans for a 12m refurbishment of Bridlington Spa have been submitted to East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The Victorian building is in urgent need of modernisation and will be closed for 18 months while the work is carried out, councillors say.
Alterations include a new entrance, better conference facilities and other repairs to doors and windows.
Work is expected to start in January and the plans are now on public display in the foyer of the building.
Centenary opening
East Riding councillors are to put forward funding applications to the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, and the European Regional Development Fund.
Stephen Parnaby, leader of the council, said: "Refurbishment of the spa underlines the council's commitment to the regeneration of Bridlington despite the disappointment over the marina.
"The work will extend the conference season and expand business tourism," he added.
Spa manager Jeremy Hartill said the plans would give Bridlington a "landmark building".
If work goes to schedule the project will be completed in 2007, which is the centenary year of the theatre's re-opening in 1907 following a fire in 1906.
