Review: Otherwise Engaged

Jill Misson
Bare breasts and binge drinking... Richard E.Grant and Anthony Head star in Otherwise Engaged.

Bare breasts, binge drinking and breaking wind...if you're not the least bit offended...read on!

Otherwise Engaged is a comedy for those who like a nipple and a tipple. But a striptease on stage and a well-stocked drinks trolley are by no means the only highlights of a great evening of entertainment.

The play is warming up in Bath before heading to the West End and features some hot talent. Richard E Grant of "Withnail and I" is perfectly cast as the central character and other brilliant performances come from well-known stars of stage and screen, Peter Wright and Anthony Head.

Set in the living room of a luxury flat, Simon Hench is hoping to enjoy a quiet evening listening to his new recording of Wagner's Parsifal. But with one interruption after another as friends and family traipse in and out of the room, the dream of being left alone with his beloved vinyl is never fully realised.

With a Mastermind-style chair, and a comfy leather sofa, the room takes on the air of a therapist's office. As characters come and go, each feels the need to unpack their emotional baggage, even though their host is indifferent to their pains and problems and simply wants to be left alone to his music.

Preferring to live a lie and avoid communication at all costs, Simon Hench gives very little of himself away but through the stories of each visitor and the secrets they reveal, we come to understand the truth of his hollow lifestyle and see he is just as pathetic as the people who surround him.

A bittersweet comedy well worth a watch. And take advantage of the 40 standby tickets available from midday on the day of the performance. You'll only pay a fiver and can then afford to treat yourself to a drink after watching the actors wash down whisky, sherry and gin for two hours!

Otherwise Enaged runs at the Theatre Royal Bath from 21st September to 1st October, 2005. Tickets are now on sale at the theatre box office on 01225 448844.
