Newcastle lad Gary Phelan wowed the viewers and studio audience with his performance of Babybird's 'You're Gorgeous' in the third Fame Academy show.

However, he failed to impress headteacher Richard Park as he asked Gary who he was performing the song to.

Fighting British spirit: Gary

Not one to let the judges bring him down, Gary quipped in response, 'it was for all the gorgeous people out there, and you're not one of them!'

Indeed, the viewers sided with Gary as they voted to keep his place in the Academy safe.

The third student to be expelled from the contest was 20 year old Lorna Grant.

All the remaining students are back in rehearsals for the next expulsion show on Wednesday.

Gary will be performing 'Drive' by The Cars in the next show.

Gary's Magic Moments
During a game of football, Gary managed to save all the penalties when he was the goalkeeper.
In a rare opportunity for student relaxation, Gary displayed he was a true Brit by having his face painted in a Union Jack style.
