Ever wondered about how your mail and parcels get to you?!
By Joanna Wright Sam Adams is a retired postman who has fond memories of his time with the Royal Mail and the people he met on his rounds. But what was a day in the life of a postman really like?!
Sam is in his eighties now but fondly recalls many tales from his time with the Royal Mail as a postal worker.
Sam worked various shifts often getting up when many of us today would just be going to bed. He would walk for many miles on routes all over Stoke-on-Trent in all weathers ... including knee deep snow!!
His time keeping was often observed with a close eye by many householders on his route and he risked complaints if he was a few seconds late. But strict time keeping is no mean feat with a heavy bag on your shoulder!
He remembers hectic times working on Stoke station when he had to dash past holiday makers to get mail on the train before it left the platform with no time to wait for bills or love letters alike.
Sam is glad of his time as a real life Postman Pat despite the pitfalls (and Pit bulls!) and supports the Royal Mail to this day. Listen more to his tales as a postie by clicking on the audio below.
