Kumble is getting ever close to Kapil Dev's Indian record |
Anil Kumble admits the pitch in Kanpur is making life very difficult for bowlers in the first Test. After three days India were 185-0 in reply to South Africa's 510-9 declared.
"It wasn't a very good pitch to bowl on since the ball did not even carry to the close-in fielders from the bat," said Kumble, who took 6-131.
India's leg-spinner added: "We always knew the Kanpur wicket was slow and we had to play good cricket. That's what we did when we batted today."
Kumble's wickets left him with 430 Test victims, just four behind Kapil Dev's Indian record.
But he added: "Breaking Kapil's record is not on my mind right now. I'll think about it when I get there."
South Africa coach Ray Jennings said: "Both the Indian openers batted very correctly and exploited our weakness. We did not bowl in the right spot today.
"They showed it was easy to bat on this pitch, which had nothing for the bowlers.
"India's openers also proved that our decision not to declare in the morning was right as they have again pushed us on to the back foot."
