  2. Fonseca comes of agepublished at 20:21 BST

    Djokovic 6-4 6-4 3-6 5-7 5-7 Fonseca

Joao Fonseca has been a rising star for a couple of years but today he has really come of age.

The 19-year-old has now reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time in what is just his sixth major.

He's the first Brazilian man to reach that stage since Thomaz Bellucci at the 2010 French Open.

And after today's performance, some will be wondering if he can emulate Brazilian icon Guga Kuerten by even lifting the title.

Joao Fonseca has definitely announced himself now.

Now I think he can say proudly that he has lived up to the hype, because everyone was saying he hadn't done much since the hype.

When all the Brazilians and South Americans were running to courts to watch him play a couple years ago, now we know why.

I think Djokovic knows he can't keep up with these guys, and this was a big moment for him to keep up with that loss.

He kept calm, because he knew the level of tennis coming at him was extraordinarily high, and for him to live with that at 39 and take it to the level it was, it's why tennis is so special.

  5. Men's draw widens furtherpublished at 20:11 BST

The men's draw had already been thrown open by the early exit of Jannik Sinner. With Carlos Alcaraz not playing here, and now Novak Djokovic gone, who will seize their chance for Grand Slam glory?

One thing is certain - a new men's singles Grand Slam champion will be crowned a week on Sunday.

Joao Fonseca speaking after beating Novak Djokovic: "I actually didn't believe I could win the match, I just played and enjoyed being in the court. What an idol we have and what a pleasure it was to step on the court against him so I thank him, I am very happy.

"I was just trying to hit the ball as fast as I could, I mean Djokovic doesn't miss and we still think he's 20. At the end of the match he was more fit than me which is crazy and when the day was getting darker I felt much slower. In the beginning I was struggling with the heat and not feeling good.

"I just believed I could do aces, it was crazy. I have never done that before I am super happy that I could finish like this."

I am gasping at what we have witnessed, that is one of the best matches we have seen here at the French Open. This is a special moment because we are seeing youth come through.

That's back-to-back five-set wins for Joao Fonseca - and in both he has come from two sets to love down.

At 19, he becomes the youngest player ever to beat Novak Djokovic at a Grand Slam.

There's a warm embrace at the net before Joao Fonseca sinks into his chair to try to comprehend what he has just done.

Novak Djokovic leaves the court to a huge ovation. Is that the last time we will see the 39-year-old play at Roland Garros?

What an incredible spectacle this has been.

He then wrong-foots the Brazilian to save the second.

One more break point left for Fonseca.

Novak Djokovic doesn't put away a volley to cede the opening point of the game to Joao Fonseca.

The Brazilian then responds to a terrific Djokovic drop-shot with an even better one of his own.

Another drop-shot follows and Djokovic is facing three break points.

Joao Fonseca goes wide with the opening point of the game. 0-15.

But he responds bravely on the next point and thrashes another forehand winner, and then fires an ace.

A desperate lob from the Brazilian just evades Novak Djokovic and then Fonseca wraps up the game with an ace.

Novak Djokovic holds serve with an sumptuous backhand pass that lands in the back corner of the court.

Just as in the fourth set, Joao Fonseca must serve to stay in the tournament.

This is a painful match and I don't think Djokovic could walk any slower in between points. You have to admire Fonseca, he is looking sprightly.

  18. Paul takes second set against Ruudpublished at 19:36 BST

    Ruud 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 1-1* Paul

American 24th seed Tommy Paul has a firm grip of his match against Norwegian 15th seed Casper Ruud after taking the second set in a tie-break.

Ruud is another player who has struggled with the intense heat in Paris after saying he was "walking around like a zombie" during his first-round win over Roman Safiullin earlier this week.

Ruud is a two-time finalist at Roland Garros, while Paul reached the quarter-finals last year.

Djokovic was being pulled in the corner. Somehow he managed to get the ball back to the baseline and get himself back to the top. I think he is genuinely enjoying this challenge.

Joao Fonseca is really leaning into the Parisian crowd now, milking the applause after he puts away a smash to go 0-15 on Novak Djokovic's serve.

He then fires a pinpoint forehand winner to make it 0-30, which gets the crowd going even more.

Djokovic recovers and gets to game point but just can't shake off the young Brazilian, who is managing to come up with some brilliant winners.

Finally Djokovic holds after a point he wins after chasing down umpteen Fonseca shots that would probably have been winners against any other player.

This is some match, and it's now passed the four-and-a-half-hour mark.
