  1. DeChambeau playing his way out of the tournament?published at 17:20 BST

    Fitzpatrick -1, DeChambeau +5, Hovland +5 (15)

Another bogey for Bryson DeChambeau as he drops to five over, which as it stands right now is three shots outside the cut mark.

That mark could well drop later on if conditions remain tough but it'll mean a nervy wait for the 2020 and 2024 US Open champion unless he can pick up a shot or two down the stretch.

Again it's the putter doing all the damage, as he three putts from 40 feet, leaving his first seven feet short and then missing that for par.

  2. Postpublished at 17:18 BST

    Clark -7, D Johnson E, Woodland +1 (14)

Typically, Wyndham Clark's drive was so far wide that it's landed in the area that's been trampled down by spectators and he's got a terrific lie.

Once again he can take aim at the green. Once again he finds the heart of it.

    Lucky break for the leader.

  3. Schauffele chasing another birdiepublished at 17:16 BST

    Schauffele -3 (13*)

US Open specialist Xander Schauffele is best placed to stop Wyndham Clark sprinting off into the distance.

Schauffele has reached the par-five fifth and uncorks a beauty 337 yards down the fairway.

The two-time major winner has eight under-par rounds at the US Open since 2020 and has improved his score by four today.

His run of nine straight top-15 finishes in this championship includes a tie for sixth here in 2018, so he knows how to work his way around this challenging layout.

  4. Bogey for Rahmpublished at 17:14 BST

    Rahm +1, Rose -1, Spieth +5 (12)

Jon Rahm overshoots his approach shot and nearly saves par, but his 19-foot putt comes up just short.

It's another bogey for the Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth sits at five over par and is currently two shots outside the cut line.

  5. Postpublished at 17:14 BST

    Clark -7, D Johnson E, Woodland +1 (14)

Another strange drive from Wyndham Clark, this time at the 15th and again he's in the undergrowth.

If the past two holes are anything to go by, birdie chance incoming.

  6. Par for Clarkpublished at 17:05 BST

    Clark -7, D Johnson E, Woodland +1 (14)

Not this time for Wyndham Clark as he can't convert from 12-and-a-half feet. Easy par though in the end.

Kudos too for Gary Woodland as he splashes out of the sand and is so on target his ball hits the bottom of the flagstick and stops dead. Excellent par.

  7. Clark gets out of trouble againpublished at 16:59 BST

    Clark -7, D Johnson E, Woodland +1 (13)

Two poor drives. Two deep crunches out of the undergrowth.

And two safely on the green.

That's the impressive story of Wyndham Clark over his past two holes, and once again he's going to have a lengthy birdie opportunity. Gutsy.

  8. Chip in saves Fitz!published at 16:58 BST

    Fitzpatrick -1, DeChambeau +4, Hovland +4 (14)

Wow! That's a big break for Matt Fitzpatrick, who holes out from the rough around the 14th green to salvage his par - and likely save himself two shots.

It's a stinker of a spot to leave himself in, as it's pretty juicy rough but he's chipping on to a big slop down towards the hole so there's a ton of jeopardy in it.

He digs it out about as well as you could expect but it's racing down the hill and would've gone flying by had it not bumped into the flagstick and dropped into the hole.

    Big bonus!

Booming drive from Dustin Johnson at the 14th, in contrast to Wyndham Clark bumping it into the fescue once again off the tee.

Another bogey at the past hole means DJ has gone from one shot off the lead to seven behind in the space of three holes.

It's been a bruising run for the 2016 champion.

  10. Birdie passes by for Rahmpublished at 16:54 BST

    Rahm E, Rose -1, Spieth +5 (11)

Justin Rose is once again unhappy despite finding the green safely.

You can tell he knows the birdie opportunities are there and wants to give himself a better look at one.

Jon Rahm throws his arms into the air after hitting his tee shot to 12 feet.

Two contrasting reactions, but neither player can make the birdie. Rahm's putt lips out, so close...

  11. Morikawa moving along nicelypublished at 16:54 BST

    Morikawa -1 (14)

Collin Morikawa is just consolidating right now on the back nine with four straight pars after those two birdies around the turn lifted him up to one under and right now that's good enough for a tie for fourth.

That's good enough right now for the two-time major champion.

  12. Schauffele moves solo secondpublished at 16:50 BST

    Schauffele -3 (13*)

Wyndham Clark had a five-shot lead for about a minute by my reckoning as on the other side of the course Xander Schauffele has just slotted in a 17-foot birdie of his own.

Into solo second at three under.

  13. Clark holes giant birdie puttpublished at 16:48 BST

    Clark -7, D Johnson E, Woodland +1 (13)

    Huge!

What a putt from Wyndham Clark - and nobody would have called that after he was in the jungle off the tee.

His reaction to that 30-footer for birdie? A big fist-pump.

    He's feeling it.

  14. Bogey for Macintyrepublished at 16:47 BST

    MacIntyre +1 (12*)

Bob Macintyre walks away with bogey after missing a putt from 15 feet - he left himself too much to do.

    Back to one over.

  15. Fighting to make the cutpublished at 16:42 BST

    Rai +2 (14)

    Gavin Andrews
BBC Sport NI at Shinnecock Hills

Aaron Rai is putting together a gutsy second round.

Following a 74 to start, the USPGA champion is inside the cut line and 2 under for the day. If he can hang on, he’ll have a chance to make another weekend major charge.

    Aaron Rai tees off
  16. Bogey for Brysonpublished at 16:40 BST

    Fitzpatrick -1, DeChambeau +4, Hovland +6 (13)

Matt Fitzpatrck stops the rot with a par following his two bogeys, but now Bryson DeChambeau has played his way back into trouble by missing his third putt from five feet or less today.

He did the hard work to be escaping the bunker to knock it close with his third, but that big putter of his has been ice cold today.

  17. Postpublished at 16:40 BST

    Clark -6, D Johnson -1, Woodland +1 (12)

That is some grisly fescue over there on the left for Wyndham Clark off the 13th tee. He's in no-man's land.

Danger written all over this shot but the 2023 US Open champion handles it very well to thump it out of there and flight his ball all the way to the green.

Two putts from 30 feet to note down par and get out of there.

  18. Rose looking to kick onpublished at 16:38 BST

    Rahm E, Rose -1, Spieth +4 (10)

Justin Rose looks at his ball in disgust. His approach finishes 40 feet from the pin, and he wanted it much closer.

He's also unhappy with his birdie attempt, but it's a solid par.

Jon Rahm makes his par more emphatically, holing from 16 feet.

  19. Another Thomas bogeypublished at 16:37 BST

    Thomas E (12*)

Shinnecock Hills is just biting back a bit now, with Justin Thomas carding a second bogey in three holes to drop back to level par and negate a lot of his good work on the front nine.

He found the bunker next to the third green, and could only get his escape to 30 feet, resulting in a two-putt bogey. These players just need to be careul now as quietly a few of them are heading the wrong way - things could quickly get out of hand.

  20. Get Involved: What will the winning score be?published at 16:33 BST

So far only Wyndham Clark has really threatened to post a score, with his six under par two shots better than anyone else has got near.

But what do you think the winning mark will be come Sunday evening?
