Defender Jack Fitzwater has been "outstanding" so far this season, his boss Matt Taylor said

Exeter City boss Matt Taylor says the club is "so lucky" to have captain Jack Fitzwater after he scored the opening goal in a 2-0 win over Accrington Stanley.

The 28-year-old defender helped the Grecians on their way to victory on Saturday by turning home a cross within two minutes.

Gwion Edwards doubled Exeter's lead 11 minutes later as the club secured its first win of the season.

Taylor said Fitzwater had been "outstanding" so far this season despite not having the clean sheets to show for it.

The centre-back moved to the Devon club in 2023 from Scottish Premiership side Livingston, and has gone on to make 67 appearances, scoring three goals.

"I think we've seen the best of him so far this season," Taylor told BBC Radio Devon.

"He didn't get the rewards of the clean sheet and the praise everyone gets if we keep the goals out in the Devon derby [against Plymouth Argyle] or at Grimsby Town.

"But since I came into this football club Jack Fitzwater has been outstanding.

"We're so privileged and so lucky to have him as our captain."

Exeter travel to York City on 29 August for their next match in League Two.

Kilmarnock have completed their second signing of the day, adding defender Johnly Yfeko from Exeter City for an undisclosed fee.

Yfeko has signed a two-year deal to join fellow new arrival, German full-back Jonathan Meier, at Rugby Park.

Former Rangers defender Yfeko, 23, played 31 games in two seasons with Exeter.

He previously made one appearance for Rangers after coming through the youth ranks at Tottenham and Leicester City.

The 23-year-old, described by Kilmarnock as a "powerful centre-back who can also play at left-back" is the club's eighth summer recruit.
