Preston North End captain Ali McCann has been ruled out "for months" after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old Northern Ireland international midfielder suffered the injury after coming on as a substitute in the 4-0 Carabao Cup defeat by Everton last month.

"Ali had his operation on Tuesday and we were all pleased with how that's gone," boss Paul Heckingbottom told the club website., external

"It's obviously a blow not to have him for the next few months, but the priority is that he comes back fit and well so we wish him all the best."

Preston have lost five of their six Championship matches so far this campaign and host Lincoln City on Saturday.
