'I've got too much left in me' - Weimann

After a career spent almost entirely in the Premier League and Championship, striker Andreas Weimann's signing for League Two Cheltenham Town was one of this summer's more unexpected transfers.

The 35-year-old has scored 143 goals for clubs including Aston Villa, Wolves, Bristol City, Watford and Derby County, but he said he has still got more in him as he drops down to the fourth tier to join the Robins.

"I've had so many team-mates now that have retired, and basically everyone says the same thing, 'If you can still play, keep playing because you are a long time retired,'" he told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"I've definitely still got that desire to play. I hope it shows in how I play as well - I still really want to do well, I still want to work hard for the team, help my team out. There was no chance I was going to retire this summer because I feel like I've got too much left in me."

Weimann has been a free agent since leaving Derby in May, having spent the second half of last season on loan with Rapid Vienna in his native Austria.

Despite returning to his home country, his wife and children remained in the UK and Weimann was looking for a new contract a lot closer to them.

"I went away last season for six months, back home to Vienna if you want to call it that, although I think my home is here now I've been here that long," he said.

"The most important thing I was looking for this summer was somewhere close that I can travel to. I wasn't really bothered what league, what competition, I just really feel like I've got loads of football left in me and I wanted to play."

A conversation with Cheltenham manager Steve Cotterill also convinced Weimann that the club was the right one for him.

"[We spoke about] how he sees me, how he wants to play. I knew a lot about him before, he was at Bristol City just as I was and I had a few players that I played with that knew about him," Weimann said.

Weimann has played in all four of Cheltenham's league games so far, starting the past two with an assist in the win at York City.

He joked that he had already scored his first goal in the 2-1 win against Rotherham, believing Leicester City loanee Jake Evans' strike hit his forehead on the way into the net.

"I'm convinced that that hit my forehead and went in but unfortunately there's only one camera angle so you can't see it," Weimann said.

"I told him [Evans] that I touched it, but it's brilliant for him, his first goal, so I was happy for him to get it."

As for when the goals will start to come for him, Weimann is sure they will.

"I'm making the right movements, I'm in the box, and hopefully the more I play with the players they get to know my movements and I get to know their passes and how they want to dribble.

"As long as I'm in there I'm sure the chances will come and I'll take them."
