Luka Smyth joins a Notts County side that have just been promoted to League One

Notts County have signed Australian forward Luka Smyth from Finnish top-flight side VPS for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.

The 22-year-old, who was on the books of A-League club Sydney FC as a teenager, moved to Vaasa in Finland in the summer of 2024 after a spell with the Central Coast Mariners in his homeland.

Smyth scored seven goals in 14 league appearances for VPS last season, with the club admitting that injury setbacks had previously held him back.

VPS said they have received a "significant" fee, external for the 6ft 4in forward, with Notts competing with "several" clubs to sign him.

Notts County's director of football Richard Montague said the club "sees a lot of development potential" in Smyth.

"He arrives having enjoyed a breakthrough season in Finland, in which he's been a big threat both in terms of his goals and all-round play," Montague told the club website., external

"We believe he can carry that momentum into the new season."

Smyth's deal includes the option of another year in the club's favour.
