Portsmouth defender Zak Swanson has signed a new two-year contract to remain at the Championship club.

The 25-year-old, whose previous deal expired this summer, first joined Pompey for an undisclosed fee from Arsenal in 2022 and has made 111 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals.

"I'm delighted that Zak has chosen to extend his time with the club for another couple of years," Portsmouth boss John Mousinho told the club website., external

Swanson was a part of the Portsmouth side which won the League One title in 2024 before helping them retain their Championship status with 16th and 18th place finishes.

He failed to break into the Arsenal first team having initially joined the Gunners as a six-year-old, but did feature a number of times on the substitutes bench before a loan spell in the Netherlands with MVV Maastricht preceded his move to Fratton Park.

A breakthrough season

Last season felt like a breakthrough for Swanson.

Stepping in for the injured Connor Ogilvie, he excelled as a makeshift left-back, to the point where John Mousinho said it might now be his best position.

Swanson's four years at the club have been a slow burn. He has always had the ability but has shown it in phases rather than week in, week out.

If Terry Devlin does depart the club this summer, which is very possible at this stage, Swanson may have the chance to stake a claim to being a regular in the starting 11.
