England batter Zak Crawley will miss Kent's next two County Championship matches in order to recharge before the club's return to T20 action.

Crawley has scored 226 runs in 12 Division Two innings this season, at an average of just 20.54, and lost his place in the England Test team to Durham's Emilio Gay, who averages 78.85 this year.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said the decision had been taken after conversations between Crawley and the England coaching staff.

He will return on 26 June, when Kent Spitfires host the Nottinghamshire Outlaws in the T20 Blast.

Crawley's place in the Test team came under scrutiny during the winter Ashes tour, when he averaged 27, and a poor start to the Championship season saw him replaced by Gay, who has scored double the number of runs in Division Two and made a half-century on his international debut against New Zealand.

The next possible opportunity for Crawley to face the red ball in domestic cricket would come on 20 August, when Kent travel to Middlesex, a match that clashes with England's first Test of their series against Pakistan.

With the third and final Test starting on 9 September, it would give Crawley three Championship matches at most in which to impress enough to win his Test place back this summer.
