Dawson critical after heavy Glamorgan defeat

Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson labelled his side's performance as "unacceptable" after they suffered a heavy defeat by Warwickshire in Cardiff.

The Welsh County were skittled for just 65 in their second innings in Cardiff as they were crushed by 257 runs and an innings in a dismal afternoon for the home side.

Despite Glamorgan's eye-catching start to life back in the Rothesay County Championship Division One, they have now lost three out of their last four games and could now face what previously seemed an inconceivable relegation.

"There's no hiding away from it. In front of our home fans, on our own pitch, that is unacceptable. I can't say any more than that really," said Dawson.

"The frustration is repeating mistakes, not just from the first innings but probably over the last few games as well. If you want to learn in any walk of life, you've got to be honest with yourself and look in the mirror."

Glamorgan's sub-par batters had no answer for title-chasing Warwickshire's vicious seam attack, and could only muster 134 runs over both innings.

Captain Ed Barnard took eight wickets while Ethan Bamber remarkably took the first five wickets of the day during that first innings, drawing high praise from Dawson.

"Sometimes you've just got to find a way to do the job and get through a tough period. They were disciplined, you know what you're going to get with Warwickshire, they're on the money with their seam attack," he added.

"They've got a top-class spinner as well, but you also have to show discipline and application, clarity in your plans, put your ego to one side at times as well and just try and get the job done and we have not done that."

The Welsh county sit seventh in the Division One table, are in worrying form and will need to improve if they are to seal a spot in Division One for 2027.

Leicestershire occupy the final relegation spot, and could face a crucial points deduction after being charged with breaching the ECB's pitch regulations during their 42-run win against Glamorgan on 20 August.

Despite the possibility of a reprieve for Dawson's side, he insists his players must be up for the challenge if they are to survive.

"We've talked as a group about how we're going to move forward and improve, so it's not through lack of hitting balls or bowling balls," said Dawson.

"It's when you get out into the middle and you're under pressure, that's where you need to make sure that your basics are nailed down and we just haven't done that and it costs you against decent sides."

Next up for Glamorgan is a crucial trip to Surrey, where they will look to build on their recent success against the hosts.

They earned their first ever Championship win over the Brown Caps by seven wickets back in June, and will look to replicate that at the Oval on Tuesday, 15 September.

"We're always talking about players' games and talking to people, seeing how the players are and focusing on the areas that we feel we can support," Dawson added.

"This isn't just a player thing, this is on me, this is on the coaching staff as well and all of us as a group. It's on all of us to be honest with ourselves, put in some hard work and go with a clear head next week."

Glamorgan then welcome fellow strugglers Essex to Cardiff for a crucial final fixture of the campaign on Thursday, 24 September.
