Alastair Chalmers missed out on the chance to win Guernsey's first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The reigning British champion, 26, came sixth in the 400m hurdles in Glasgow.
It meant he could not add to the bronze medal he won in the event four years ago.
Chalmers stumbled over a hurdle with about 200m to go as he challenged for the lead and lost ground he could never make up as he finished in 50.24 seconds.
The race was won by Nigeria's Ezekiel Nathaniel in 48.47 seconds as England's Jake Minshull took silver and Jamaica's Assinie Wilson bronze.
The result also means Chalmers misses out on becoming only the second islander to win medals at consecutive Commonwealth Games.
Pistol shooter Adrian Breton remains the only person from Guernsey to reach the podium more than once - he won individual rapid fire silver in 1986, gold in 1990 and pairs bronze in 1994.
"I was quite far away from hurdle six and that's why I clipped it and then I had to play catch up," said Chalmers.
"It's gutting. I really wanted a medal there and I'm in great shape, so I don't know what happened today really.
"At this level when you mess up like that it's curtains really."

Despite not winning a medal, Chalmers is still the most-decorated track and field athlete ever to come from Guernsey.
He is a six-time British 400m hurdles champion - regaining the title he lost last year earlier this summer.
Chalmers made the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles at the last Olympic Games but crashed out three-quarters of the way around after clipping a barrier.
His Guernsey record of 48.30 seconds is 1.24 seconds faster than any other islander has ever managed.
"It's just such a shame," he added to BBC Guernsey.
"I had a great heat and thought I could have put it into the final but I just couldn't.
"That's the event, you mess up once or you're not on top form and you get butchered for it, and that's what happened today."
