Gareth Davies is to leave his role as chair of Commonwealth Games Wales (CGW) when his term ends in March 2027.

The former Wales and British and Irish Lions rugby player took over as Team Wales chair in April 2023.

During his tenure, Davies oversaw Wales' preparations and involvement in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

Non-executive director Wendy Barbour will join Davies in leaving Team Wales at the same time to end her 12-year stint.

Team Wales will seek new appointments to the roles with Davies playing his part "to ensure a smooth transition of board leadership".

"The organisation has been through a significant period of change and transformation," said Davies.

"We have strengthened our financial position, continued to build a strong and sustainable organisation, and delivered a hugely successful Glasgow 2026 Games that showcased the talent, determination and spirit of Wales on the Commonwealth stage.

"None of this would have been possible without the passion, commitment and resilience of the entire Commonwealth Games Wales community.

"From our athletes and National Governing Bodies to our staff, board, partners and supporters, I have been privileged to work alongside so many talented and dedicated people who share a belief in what Team Wales can achieve."

CGW president Helen Phillips thanked Davies for his leadership while highlighting Barbour's critical role "in supporting transition and stabilising the financial growth of the Commonwealth Games for three cycles".
