Thousands rally in Israel calling for Jewish-Arab coalition to oust Netanyahu

Weekend

Available for 29 days

Israeli activists rallied in Tel Aviv last night, calling on Gadi Eisenkot, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s main political rival, to work with Arab parties to form a government. Results from the election show the governing right-wing coalition headed by Netanyahu's Likud party has 53 seats while the "Change" bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot has 48 seats. A deadlock in Tuesday’s elections means siding with the parties could help Eisenkot form a government as the election did produce a historic high of 19 seats for Arab Israeli parties. Also in the programme: In the Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, there are thousands of volunteers there today to build 108 Buddhist structures in 24 hours; and King Charles will be ending a nine-day tour of the Caribbean in Antigua on Tuesday and attending a meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government after calls for Britain to apologise for its role in selling enslaved people for profit. Presenter Julian Worricker is joined by Tim Judah, a journalist, author and special correspondent for The Economist covering the Balkans and Ukraine, and Madeleine Schwartz, a journalist and editor of the Dial Magazine.
