Malvern's 1966 World Cup winner

Secret Worcestershire

Available for over a year

Dr Neil Phillips, who later moved to and worked as a GP Worcestershire town, was the England team doctor in both the 1966 and 1970 World Cups. Discover his surprise route to the role, with the previous senior team's doctor having found to have taken too much holiday, resulting in Dr Phillips stepping up with only weeks' worth of notice. In an interview recorded before his passing in 2015, Dr Phillips shares incredible stories from being on the pitch and collecting the Jules Rimet trophy at the old Wembley Stadium, as well as stories with the players he got to know so well, not least captain Bobby Moore, manager Alf Ramsay and Jack Charlton, the latter he brought to Middlesbrough as club manager. Dr Phillips recalls his experience of England's campaign for the 1970 World Cup, when Bobby Moore was accused of stealing a bracelet in Columbia during the acclimatisation campaign, as well as the immediate aftermath of defeat on the pitch as reigning champions. Hear from his daughter, Annie Onions, who shares memories of her father's appearance on Top Of The Pops, alongside shirts, letters and photos she has as incredible keepsakes from an incredible career.
