African Union Covid-19 adviser: 'Covax is failing'

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

The global scheme designed to ensure the fair and equitable distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine worldwide, has been too limited in its ambition and was conceived with "a very colonial mindset". That criticism comes from Dr. Ayoade Alakija, co-chair of the African Union Vaccine Delivery Alliance. She told Focus on Africa’s Esau Williams that the scheme, known as Covax, is failing. Leaders of the world's richest economies are now pledging to to donate several million more vaccine doses to poorer countries by the end of the year, but Dr Alakija says that does not go far enough.
