Elizabeth Alker presents an afternoon of exclusive music-making from the UK and beyond including recent highlights from the Glenarm Festival of Voice. Featuring specially made recordings with performances from the acclaimed soprano, Erika Baikoff, the Grammy award-winning mezzo, Fleur Barron, and one of today's leading recital tenors, Ilker Arcayürek. Throughout the week, we'll be shining a spotlight on the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Today, the masterful Finnish conductor, John Storgårds, leads the orchestra in an iconic work from Finland's greatest composer, Sibelius. The stirring 'Karelia Suite' evokes the resilient spirit of the Finnish people through majestic brass chorales and folk-inspired melodies. We'll also hear from the NOVO Quartet, one of Denmark's most exciting young chamber ensembles, and one of our current BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists. *** BBC Philharmonic: Jean Sibelius Karelia Suite BBC Philharmonic John Storgards (conductor) Glenarm Festival: Clara Schumann Die gute Nacht, die ich dir sage Sie liebten sich beide Die stille Lotosblume İlker Arcayürek (tenor) Simon Lepper (piano) NOVO Quartet: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart String Quartet in D minor, K421 NOVO Quartet BBC Philharmonic: Edward Elgar Violin Concerto Christian Tetzlaf (violin) BBC Philharmonic John Storgards (conductor) Glenarm Festival: Robert Schumann Liederkreis, Op 39 Erika Baikoff (soprano) Simon Lepper (piano) NOVO Quartet: Johannes Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op 115 Oleg Shebeta-Dragan (clarinet) NOVO Quartet *** To listen to this programme (using most smart speakers) just say "Ask BBC Sounds to play Classical Live".
