Live at the BBC Proms: the Mahler Academy Orchestra recreate the original sound and style of Mahler's Ninth Symphony under conductor Philipp von Steinaecker. Presented by Tom Service, live from the Royal Albert Hall, London. Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 9 Mahler Academy Orchestra Philipp von Steinaecker (conductor) Death haunts Mahler’s monumental Ninth Symphony, woven right through it from the brooding farewell of a first movement – ‘the greatest Mahler ever composed’, according to Alban Berg – to the finale’s radiant, distant vision of a world beyond. Musicians from across Europe come together under Philipp von Steinaecker in the Mahler Academy Orchestra’s Proms debut. This pioneering project combines student players with professionals from Europe’s best ensembles to explore and recreate the instruments Mahler himself would have known, generating a performance as close as possible to the work’s original sound and style.
