Don’t follow the herd: the deer cull making a difference

On Your Farm

Available for over a year

When Helen Stewart took over her family’s hill farm she was shocked to find hundreds of red deer were the main beneficiaries of the farm’s fine grazing. She refused to bow to the conventional local idea that shooting enough to make a dent in the huge herd would mean buying a digger to bury them. Instead she poured her energy into a social enterprise that’s created half a dozen jobs and helped feed thousands. Richard Baynes visited Knockbarry Farm in Perthshire to meet her, try the venison and hear her story. Produced and presented by Richard Baynes
