Norma Winstone in conversation

'Round Midnight

Available for 28 days

‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades. This Friday night, Soweto is joined by special guest, pioneering British vocalist and lyricist Norma Winstone. Over the past five decades and counting, Norma has been a leading figure in UK jazz, and is internationally celebrated for her expansive and versatile vocal style, which often offers a masterclass in improvisation. She has worked with peers and fellow jazz legends including Kenny Wheeler, Michael Garrick, and John Taylor, and has inspired musicians from across the generations. Her latest project, a duo album with pianist Kit Downes titled Outposts of Dreams is out now. In this conversation, Soweto and Norma discuss everything from the breadth of creativity and comradery found in the late 1960s and 70s jazz scene, her early influences, the importance of musical freedom and exploration, and more.
