Steve Punt, with his hair unkempt and with bags under his eyes, seemed the wearier of the two. Best-known from the golden days of The Mary Whitehouse Experience, the pair are now to be found hawking their own brand of satirical humour on both BBC Radio 2 and 4 with It's Been a Bad Week and The Now Show. Tired satire The act started promisingly with a review of the tourist information leaflets they had picked up at various hotels and restaurants on their Grown Men. In Public tour, which has included such places of interest as Corby, Croydon and Camberley. | | Punt and Dennis ended their tour in Weston |
"So, you've got a helicopter museum," Steve Punt began in accusatory fashion, before proceeding to the delights of visiting Clevedon Court. The audience lapped up the local references but the laughter soon thinned. Hugh Dennis seemed to spend much of his time just removing and replacing his jacket, with the odd mime or sketch in between. In the meantime, Steve Punt - armed with a clipboard and often propping himself up on the lectern - embarked on a long verbal ramble that touched upon such comedy safe houses as internet shopping, the science used in shampoo adverts, and the seemingly friendless Microsoft paperclip icon. Tired comedians However, Punt's delivery lacked energy, and the Velociraptor impression, wheeled out by Dennis during the quiet moments, soon began to jar. The real high points were provided by their technical support team, who must have been suffering from an even greater fatigue, as sound effects frequently arrived at the wrong moments, forcing the pair to improvise. By the time the interval arrived, I was halfway up the wooden steps to Bedfordshire. Watching tired comedians can be very... well... tiring. |
