Severn Hospice weren't short of volunteers to help them officially start the building of Telford's new £5m hospice on 3 July 2006. | "While I was in the hospice my husband stayed with me for a week, which I found invaluable. The people... everybody was there for you and your family." | | Maz Gillis |
Appropriately, for a building funded by the community, patients, their families and the local community all turned out in force armed with a spade to cut the first sod. Fundraising began in 2004 as part of Severn Hospice's 15th anniversary celebrations. When building started, over £4m had been raised, with more money to come. The Apley Castle development should be completed by October 2007. Initially the Apley Castle hospice will offer day care, with in-patient beds to follow. Since it first started, Severn Hospice (formerly Shropshire & Mid Wales Hospice) has looked after more than 11,000 patients and their families. Around 35% of Severn Hospice's patients come from the Telford area and the the new centre should allow them to expand, while offering care where it is most needed. We'll continue to follow the project at Apley Castle over the next few months and you'll be able to see updates on this webpage. |
