Somalia: Millions facing severe food shortages

Reports and analysis of the day's political, economic and sports news from across Africa.

There are fears that millions of people in Somalia are facing severe food shortages this year, with crop and vegetable production expected to fall by 80% this season. The NGO Save the Children says low rainfall and locust swarms are factors in the crisis, and warns that livestock sales, the basis of survival for many Somali families, are expected to fall by up to 55%.

Plus, Uganda and Tanzania herald the signing of a major deal on a massive crude oil pipeline, but is it as rosy as it seems?

And more than 30 Christians detained because of their faith in Eritrea have been released.
