Australian MP hit by car was a 'deliberate act', says PM
Australian media are reporting that an MP who was hit by a car in a deliberate attack has lost one of her legs. Helen Haines, who is 65, was struck by a vehicle outside her office in the town of Wangaratta in Victoria yesterday. The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said the MP remained in a critical condition after surgery.
The suspect allegedly did a U-turn in order to strike the MP and then reversed to ram her a second time, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke says. A 43-year-old man, from nearby Tarrawingee, was detained at the scene by a local barber before being taken into custody.
