Council removes dozens of 'tatty' lamppost flags

Leicestershire County Council has removed dozens of Union and St George flags from lampposts because they were unsafe or in a "very poor condition".

In the summer of 2025, there was a national movement to increase the number of flags flying in public places.

Leicestershire County Council say that they “ask people not to attach anything to lampposts or any other road equipment for safety reasons.”

Paul Baines is Professor of Political Marketing at the University of Leicester and he explained what the thinking behind this was.
