Mark Rowley on making stolen phones unusable

Sir Mark Rowley, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, says rising levels of public disorder are "right at the centre" of issues police forces face.

Belfast has seen a second night of unrest prompted by a serious knife attack on Monday, with a water cannon deployed to disperse a large crowd. Homes belonging to ethnic minority families were being targeted by rioters, with Sir Mark calling reports "ghastly".

The Metropolitan Police has also asked the home secretary for further measures to tackle phone theft, including ensuring that phone companies render handsets unusable once they're stolen.

The Commissioner says the move will "take the profit out of criminal business".
