Rishi Sunak: Labour leadership 'more than personality contest'

Ex-Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said it would be “beneficial” for any future Labour leader to get the job through a leadership contest.

Mr Sunak, who became PM without a contest when Liz Truss resigned, said reflecting on his own experience that a having a debate over ideas meant a new leader would “have a mandate”.

Speaking to Radio 4’s Today programme, he said he would advise any new PM to “focus overwhelmingly on delivering economic growth” as the “single biggest priority” for the UK.

He also spoke about the "financial literacy" findings by the Richmond Project, the financial charity he and his wife started, that four in ten people lack a proper understanding of key terms of managing money.
