Pakistan is experiencing an 'unprecedented super flood'

Millions of people are being affected by floods in Pakistan. Nearly 1,000 people have been killed since June and the government has declared a national emergency.

This year's heavy monsoon rains have kept coming back with a previously unseen intensity, causing destruction up and down the country.

Sherry Rehman is Pakistan's climate minister and describes the current weather conditions as "completely unprecedented in terms of millimetres of rain". She tells Newshour there is 700% more rain than in other years and that some cities have seen 1100mm of rainfall in one day.

"It's been a completely unprecedented climate catastrophe through the months of April to now. Starting with heatwaves, glacial lake outburst floods... forest fires... and now we have this completely bizarre super flood."
