Rail strike 'not about who opens doors'

Southern and ScotRail workers have begun the first of a series of one-day strikes in a dispute over plans to operate more trains without guards.

Mike Lynch, assistant general secretary of the RMT, told Nick Robinson that he believed the role of train guards was "safety critical" and accused the government, Govia Southern and ScotRail of scrapping the role for financial gain.

"We sincerely believe it's safer to have guards who are properly trained and competent - to protect the passengers - not to protect the company's revenue," he said.
