For most of her life Peggy Seeger wrote songs about the outside world. She tells Kate Molleson why the love songs came only in her fifties, when she fell for Irene Scott.

Peggy had spent 33 years with Ewan MacColl, her workmate and the father of her three children. By the time Ewan died she had fallen for her best friend, and that was when the love songs came, starting with an unaccompanied song of three verses about not knowing what to do with what had hit her.

Irene now lives in New Zealand, and the two have not been able to meet since the pandemic. They speak every night and every morning, and a mulberry bush Irene sent grows in Peggy's garden. It has been 33 years, soon to be one more than she had with Ewan.
