Bruckner's Ninth Symphony

From the Barbican: cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason joins the London Symphony Orchestra in Edmund Finnis's new concerto before Sir Antonio Pappano conducts Bruckner's Ninth Symphony.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason joins the London Symphony Orchestra in a new cello concerto written especially for him by Edmund Finnis. And Sir Antonio Pappano conducts Bruckner's monumental Ninth Symphony.

The quiet intensity of Edmund Finnis’s Cello Concerto, a work he describes as: "The most lyrical, intense and emotionally direct music that I have written so far,’ paves the way for Bruckner’s final visionary symphonic statement.

Austrian composer Bruckner may have left his Symphony No 9 incomplete, but it still serves as a summation of his life. Antonio Pappano conducts the LSO in its three-movement form which ends with the overwhelming Adagio, a movement Bruckner called his "Farewell to Life".

Recorded last month at London's Barbican Centre, and presented by Martin Handley,

Edmund Finnis: Cello Concerto (LSO co-commission)
Bruckner (ed Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs): Symphony No 9 in D minor

Sheku Kanneh-Mason (cello)
London Symphony Orchestra
Antonio Pappano (conductor)
