Chris Terrill Remembers... Soho Stories

Film-maker Chris Terrill looks back on his seminal 1996 series Soho Stories.

1996 saw the peak of Britpop, the divorce of Charles and Diana and England hosting the European Football Championship. It also saw the beginnings of a new TV genre, ‘docu-soap’, with Chris Terrill’s series Soho Stories. Armed with a single camera, Chris embedded himself in the heart of this multi-faceted community, charting their lives, work, relationships, religion and fears.

Chris tells us how his career as an anthropologist provided the inspiration for the idea and how the invention of a new video camera made that a reality. He describes the stories he found: the last days of what had once been Soho’s thriving Jewish populace, its notorious sex industry, the rise of the ‘pink pound’ and the battle against crime. Tales told with warmth through the people living them, their guard down - Chris making friendships that have lasted to this day.
