Autumn & Change through the Seasons

A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Angad Kaur.

A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Angad Kaur

Good morning.

October takes us further into Autumn and soon the clocks will go back.

I’ve been reflecting on the changing seasons and my relationship to them through the different stages of life.

The four seasons happen in a cycle. We also experience our own cycle within the cycles of nature.

For a period of time, I felt glad when there was more darkness. Friends didn’t understand because they were so joyous about Summer, the world becoming a sunny playground of adventure. But as I’ve experienced periods of low mood, it makes sense that I welcomed withdrawing through the darkening of the days to mirror what was happening internally.

This year, however, I’ve noted through the Summer months, how much I delighted in waking up to the sun and enjoying the long days filled with more opportunities to be outside. Even if just sitting on a bench, how basking in the glorious rays expanded my mind to create new pictures of possibilities and a different sense of wellbeing, reflecting a change in my own cycle.

Moving into Autumn, I decided that each morning I’ll go for a walk in my local park to make a more conscious connection to the seasonal shift.

The softer light of the sun brings my attention to the changing colours of the leaves, now lying on the ground. As the trees let the leaves fall, I see how nature doesn’t hold onto things, inviting me to consider what I might need to let go of. And even though Autumn and less daylight hours comes around another year, I can relate differently this time.

Dear God, thank you for the wisdom of nature, for how it doesn’t judge our moods but supports our inner landscape to become a place of more harmony and acceptance of change, just like the seasons.
