A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Angad Kaur

Good morning.

Today, Sikhs will honour the day in 1708 when Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru in human form, officially declared the Sri Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal, living Guru and spiritual teacher of Sikhs.

The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is often referred to as a scripture, containing 1430 pages offering direction and guidance for living a truthful life. But it is also written in a form to give a direct experience of the Infinite just as the contributing Gurus, Saints and Bards of the time experienced and captured the wisdom of the Divine through the power of the Word.

Culturally and socially, language evolves across the generations and adapts to new technologies. I’m often catching up with new trends in vocabulary when I’m in the company of young people.

Yet each time I find myself in a situation and need guidance, to see a bigger picture, investing in my relationship with the Sri Guru Granth Sahib will always be of service.

I’ve come to learn that the Word of God isn’t limited to any specific time and place. Spiritual teachings are timeless and yet always timely, whether I was having challenges in my relationship in 1626 or in 2026. But also the action of recitation, when done with patience, sincerity and devotion, is like a key that opens the door to accessing wisdom that is beyond my less knowing mind.

Dear God, whenever I find myself in situations of not knowing, feeling lost for words or on the edge of emotionally reactive words, may I remember the practice of reciting Your Name and how this connection brings more clarity to the occasion and can elevate my communication within a much larger understanding.
