This week, Focus on Africa: The Conversation looks ahead to the Nigeria elections scheduled for January 2027, and explores why so few women make it on to the ballot.
An in-depth weekly conversation focusing on a topical issue in Africa. In this episode, Focus on Africa: The Conversation explores what is holding women back from leading in Nigerian politics. Nigeria has one of the lowest rates of women's political representation in the world, according to the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre. Women make up less than 5% of parliamentarians, while just 54 women hold seats across the country's 990-member State Houses of Assembly.
Hosted by Nkechi Ogbonna, the episode features Ufuoma Nnamdi-Udeh, Executive Director of Enough is Enough, and Abuja-based politician Zainab Buba Galadima. They discuss the cost of running for office, cultural expectations placed on women, and what needs to change to get more women into Nigerian politics.
